Running a household is no easy task at the best of times, even in the slower-moving lifestyle you’ll find in Chiang Mai.

Help is at hand, and usually at a very reasonable cost too. Whether you have a jungle of a garden that needs taming or just need someone to clean up after you a couple of times a month, you’ll find someone to do it at a very reasonable price.

Cleaners/Maid Service

Using a cleaning service in Chiang Mai is a lot more common than in most western countries. Whether you are renting a studio condo or own a seven-bedroom palace, you’ll be surprised how lost-cost it can be to keep your Chiang Mai home clean.

Most condo buildings will have an in-building cleaner – or team of cleaners – who keep the communal areas clean, and can also be hired to clean your condo. For around 300-500 baht you’ll be able to hire someone give your condo the once over, though remember the cost of cleaning is obviously dependent on the size of your condo in Chiang Mai.

Some condo buildings might even include a weekly or monthly clean in the  building fees but this is not very common here in Chiang Mai.

Alternatively, or if you move into a house, private cleaning services are never too far away.

There are cleaning companies and agencies who send cleaners out all over the city. Prices will be similar, though charged hourly or by the half or full day. Most will start at 250 baht per hour, or 1000 baht for half a day.

These companies will also offer deep/move out cleans, a laundry service, window cleaning, and pressure-washing. If it needs cleaning, someone will do it!

A quick search or query on some of the local Expat Facebook groups will also deliver recommendations from the community, if you are looking to hire someone local, and might save you a hundred baht or so an hour. Alternatively, just ask your neighbors. The likelihood is most of them will use a maid or cleaning service and be able to – or not! – recommend theirs.

If you live in a moo baan (Gated Community), then there is a decent chance that the main office will have a gardener who can service your garden. Each moo baan will likely have their own rates but expect to pay at least 500 baht for half a day or pruning or planting.

You’ll find prices to be similar if hiring a private gardener. If you have particular projects in mind for your garden, then get a few quotes from the gardening companies or independent contractors in Chiang Mai.

Again, word of mouth is king in Chiang Mai. Ask you neighbours – or any house you pass by whose garden you admire!

Pool maintenance

Some houses and villas in Chiang Mai come with a swimming pool. You’ll need to get it cleaned fairly frequently, as well as the regular water maintenance. If you have a chlorinated pool the chemicals to regulate the ph balance cost largely the same as anywhere else.

A standard pool clean will cost as little as 1,000 baht, but will obviously depend on the size of your pool. Make sure if renting a house with a pool you are clear in the contract who is responsible for the pool cleaning/maintenance and chemicals.

Air Con Maintenance

If you’ve not got air conditioning in your condo or home, then you’re missing out! If you do, however, you’ll need to get it serviced regularly.

It is likely to be a condition of your contract if you are renting a home that it should be serviced or cleaned every six months. If you own your home, then make sure you remember to.

Units will get plenty of use and the external condensers are exposed to the elements, so it is important to have them cleaned at least a couple of times a year. It will usually cost around 700 baht for each unit and again this depends on the type and size of the units that you have in the condo or house. Most Chiang Mai rental contracts will mention cleaning the air-conditioners as part of the agreement every 6 months.
